The ENSEMBLE Project aims to provide an answer, through the use of ICT, to thesearch for new ways to integrate social groups that are at risk of being marginalised. The target group is represented by group of migrants of first and second generations. For many years now, EU countries have been undergoing huge change, even if withdifferent characteristics, and are becoming more and more multicultural countries. Widesections of the immigrant population are facing many different kinds of difficulty, be itlinguistic or understanding the norms, regulations and basic ways to become part of thesocial and labour life of the host nations. Despite the socially disadvantaged conditionsof wide sectors of the immigrant population, tools such as mobile telephony show thatthere is a high capacity for penetration even in these cases. In the current ENSEMBLE Project, our objective is to explore the possibility offered bymobile phone and MP3 devices to favour training and integration processes. Theenvisaged two-year project aims to produce and experiment some training modulesrelated to topics of European citizenship, labour rights etc, delivered in the language ofthe host country, at an elementary language level (CEF levels A1-A2). The innovativeaspect of this project lies in the research and experimentation of mobile technologyinteraction methodologies. The experimentation is to be undertaken in two municipalitiesin Italy and France on a sample population of different national/ethnic extraction. Themethodology adopted can subsequently be transferred to other content areas as well asto other target populations. Mobile technology applied to learning at a distance(mLearning) has already been proven to be effective (cfr. Pachler N.2007, ISSN1753-3385) in specific contexts. We will use short, segmented modules for on-demandtraining for the simplest and most widespread low cost technology available today:phone and MP3 device
