The project aims to build a Polycentric Infrastructure for operational coastal modelling, generating information on the weather conditions, wave climate and surface currents and downscale it to the local scale where endusers need it.The main contribution of this project is for Maritime Security by providing forecasts for meteorology, ocean currents and wave height both at regional and local scales, allowing the enduser to interact directly with the system and not just to obtain standard information. Another contribution is for coastal management, including protection of shore infrastructures and bathing water quality forecasting. The technology necessary for building such a system is already available in the countries of the Atlantic Arc, but is spread for various countries and institutions. The Polycentric Infrastructure proposed will combine those technologies creating added value. The Mercator Ocean is running a model for the whole world forecasting the circulation - currents, levels, temperature and salinity - and assimilating field data - levels and temperatures- every week. MOHID model has been applied off the Iberian coast forced by results of Mercator and by results of the Meteorological model run by MeteoGalicia for producing results at regional and local scales. In order to add value, INTECMAR will use the local models in real cases, pointing out the needs and lacks as well the improvements and sucess.Main objectives of the project:- To produce results at a regional scale forcing the system with a regional meteorological model and the Global Circulation Model for currents and with a large scale wave generation model for the waves- To produce results at a local scale, nesting the local model within the regional model, being concerned with local processes- To develop an internet based bidirectional interface permitting to the End-user the submission of jobs to the modelling system that is running operationally. Achievements: From the outset of the project, together with the establishment of two committees (a management committee and a support committee), the EASY project relied on two external observers: Marine Institute of Ireland Marcel Cure (Ireland) and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science – CEFAS (UK). Thus it has been possible to renew the EASY project in the new programme with the new EASYCO project, which brings together all the countries of the Atlantic Area that have taken an interest in projects covering biogeochemical processes and fisheries. To lead the structure, regular meetings and forums have been organised each quarter in Portugal (Lisbon, the Azores), France (Toulouse) and Spain (Santiago de Compostela). The polycentric structure was built by integrating development tools for the different partners. These models of regional and local flow depend on a model of global flow through open border conditions, requiring two atmospheric models to impose flows through a free area. Thus, the overall objective of this project was to create a polycentric infrastructure which can produce real-time forecasts of ocean currents and the restless marine climate necessary for maritime safety and for simulating the mitigation of marine pollution managed offshore (oil spills) or along the coastline (urban discharge). The goal's specific objectives were: - Creating a system of regional models reinforced by atmospheric models at regional level and by a general flow model via currents or waves. - Creating a system of local models to support the regional models. - Creating a tool to perform simulations through the project website in real time. - A major event, "EUROGOOS 2008" in Exeter in the UK, brought together 100 participants from the scientific community. - Website: www.project-easy.info in English, - 200 brochures in English, 1600 copies of leaflets distributed in English (eight leaflets – 200 copies each) - 13 press articles in Portuguese, one radio show in Portugal.
