After the huge success in sending 15 students for internships in Brighton in 2014, it was of great importance to us to be able to send another group this year as well. The goals have been to expand the students’ linguistic, cultural, academic and personal competences, in order to facilitate improved future job/career opportunities, internationally as well as nationally. This year we sent 10 students to Brighton. These students were chosen among applicants from current all HG2 classes at EUC Nordvest. In the selection process we weighted not only the applicant’s English competences, but also other academic competences and the applicant’s personal competences and background. We tried to be very careful to obtain an equal distribution of students with varying academic and personal competences and backgrounds. For example this year we also selected students with comparably weak academic and personal competences, who we considered would especially benefit by taking part. Thankfully, again this has proven to be the case. The students all took part in 3-week internships in local businesses in Brighton, England. Apart from this, they lived independently in a rented house and had to take care of day to day chores like shopping, cooking, cleaning etc. themselves. In their spare time the students also took part in cultural sightseeing trips both locally and to for example Beachy Head in Sussex and London. Results/impact In order to make it possible for us to evaluate the results and impact, the students were asked by our partner in England to: 1. At the start of their internships to fill out a questionnaire with their hopes/expectations for the internship and the stay in Brighton in general. 2. At the end of their internships to fill out an evaluation questionnaire based on their original hopes and expectations. This helped the students to reflect on their stay and what they had learned. At the same time it is an excellent tool for us as a school/accompanying teachers in relation to evaluation of the results and the success of the internships/stay or the lack of it. Furthermore we gathered all the participants for an evaluation day on 24 April 2015, where we spent the day completing the electronic evaluation in Mobility Tool, and having individual talks with each student about the stay, and what impact the stay had had on each of them, both academically and personally. And finally, we asked the students to make their own scrapbook about the stay. This was meant as a tool for further reflection. It turned out to be a good and creative way of bringing back detailed memories about, and experiences from, the stay, which in turn opened up for further discussion with the students about their personal and academic development and benefits resulting from the stay. It is our clear impression that the development the students have experienced through participating in this project, has had and will have a positive effect on the rest of their lives, both career wise and personally.
