An object of the Berlin educational policy is the development of schools towards a European perspective. Part of this initiative is the concept of European Schools which is nationally wide unique: The different locations of the State Europe School Berlin (SESB) are understood as schools of special educational character.Primary intention of the State Europe School Berlin is to co-educate bilingual student groups in bilingual classes. The SESBs currently come up with nine language combinations: the German language is twinned with one of the languages English, French, Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. Each language combination treats both languages at equal level, not only with respect to language abilities but also to the educational content. Therefore the students train and use not only the language but also make social experiences and get an insight into the culture of the partner country. From the 9th year on pupil can master both languages at a native level.Currently, we seek ways for these European Schools, which traditionally had been orientated only bilaterally, to gain a more global European dimension. To support this process, a concept paper was prepared in the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Science Berlin.Several of the measures addressed relate to staff development and training, in particular of the moderators of the SESB.With support of the Berlin office in Brussels, moderators of SESB get the chance to gain a first-hand insight into the European institutions and the priority projects of the European Commission. The training-concept of the Berlin office in Brussels consists of three components: First comes a six-hour seminar in Berlin, where an overview of current projects of European education policy is given. The second component includes a three-day stay in Brussels, which is used for lectures as well as school visits, discussions with the Commission and meetings with educational stakeholders in Brussels. The third component is an assessment seminar, which again will take place in Berlin. Here the thematic, structural and procedural guide lines for further moderating activities shall be drawn.
