EU Youth Council
Start date: Feb 1, 2015, End date: Jul 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project EU Youth Council entails the organisation of a three day seminar that will enhance the participants’ understanding of the democratic workings of the EU leading to a simulation game on the EU. The conference will bring together 50 youths (16-30 old), from all geographical areas, minorities and communities of Cyprus following an inclusive gender balanced approach, to a three day event which: a) Through presentations and non-formal education methodology will educate and inform them on how EU institutions function and b) Engage them in a pre-constructed role-playing simulation game of how EU institutions function The organisers will utilise the expertise on non-formal education of the Cyprus Youth Council’s Pool of Trainers which in cooperation with other experts ( such as the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, European Parliament Information Office in Cyprus, Eurodesk, Cyprus Youth Board etc) will formulate an engaging and youth friendly approach and programme in line with the tools and objectives of non-formal education. This team of experts and facilitators will liaise in order to prepare in advance the parameters and scenario of a simulation role-playing activity that will place the participants in a “simulated” environment on how EU institutions work. For instance the participants will be assigned a “role” representing a key-actor in the decision making process (member states, Commission President, European Parliament President etc). The theme of the simulation will focus on a current youth related issue that will engage youths as active EU citizens. The main objectives of the project are: a) To educate youths on how EU institutions work through an interactive and engaging activity b) Make the youth understand the responsibilities and limits of each key-player in the decision making process c) Raise awareness on the rights and responsibilities of the youth as EU citizens, including EU funding opportunities d) Enhance their self-understanding as active EU citizens e) Act as multipliers - promoters of EU citizenship at a local level Following the conference, the participants themselves will record their change in attitude and the experience gained through the event, in order to be widely promoted through the Cyprus Youth Council website as well as all available social and conventional media.
