PROJECT
FINISHED
This project as proposed in this document will contribute to the enhancement and development of European Union (EU) studies in Palestinian universities specifically at Birzeit University’s Ibrahim Abu Lughod Institute for International Studies (IALIIS). Birzeit’s IALIIS was established in 1994 and offers a Master’s Degree Program in International Studies. The MA program includes various disciplines in political studies, law, economics and history. The Institute also offers Diplomacy Studies and Force Migration and Refugee Studies. During the last four years, IALIIS has offered specialized courses in EU studies which the Institute is working to further develop. Over the past few decades the role of the EU in the international system has taken a central interest among researches who tackle the questions of the international political system. In the Arab region and Palestine in particular, the extent of the academic work is marginal, in spite of the huge political and economical interests that EU politics has in the region. Although the EU exerts huge efforts in supporting the Arab region, there is a lack of academic knowledge and university specializations that cover and analyze EU studies. This lack contributes to a shortage in academic research regarding EU policies and procedures. However, the proposed project will include a series of courses that will be offered by IALIIS that aims to bridge the gap and offer adequate information of the political, institutional, historical, and economic aspects of the EU. The proposed project will offer three courses that address the above mentioned gaps. The classes which will be offered over the course of three years and include: EU History, Growth and Prospects, EU Unique Phenomenon or Relevant Model and EU History, Law and Institutions. These courses will contribute to the role of EU studies at the IALIIS by identifying the need to develop this field of study at the Institute.
