EU Multilingualism, Intercultural Dialogue and Language Education
Start date: Sep 1, 2015, End date: Aug 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project consists in a series of activities directed at promoting the study and discussion of EU-multilingualism in the Faculty of Arts, UCLM. We will examine the European and national language policies designed to promote multilingualism as a European added value and to discuss and debate some consequences of these policies, as well as some of their potential future implementations. We will prepare and deliver three different courses: an undergraduate course on European multilingualism and social inclusion; a postgraduate course on EU policies to promote multilingualism among its citizens; and a summer course on EU language policies and intercultural dialogue. These teaching activities will be accompanied by a multilingual educational website and a film series, research papers and lectures, and an action-oriented research plan on regional multilingualism. We are interested in the analysis of the role of EU institutions in the process of safeguard and promotion of the linguistic identity of the continent through a multilingualism-oriented language policy. Attention is paid to the Civil Society Platform on Multilingualism, aimed at developing a coherent framework for multilingual policy in the EU as part of a larger political agenda for bringing Europe closer to its citizens and strengthening a pan-European identity in harmony with national and regional identities. This project targets three main groups: university students with a relatively low previous knowledge of EU institutions; the general public (with special attention to Castilla-La Mancha); and researchers, professionals and civil society representatives. The project includes three main packages (quality control; research and dissemination and valorization). Progress will be continually evaluated, both internally and externally. By expanding and increasing interest in EU multilingualism, we will contribute to a better understanding of its institutions and to an increase in research in this area.
