EU Law and Gender: Making Equality Effective
Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2019 PROJECT  FINISHED

The overall aim of the JM module EU Law and Gender: Making Equality Effective is to mainstream higher and expert education in the area of EU law on gender equality in the form of seminars, lectures and the currently underdeveloped e-learning concept. The specific aim of the module is to expand the traditional core subjects at the Zagreb Faculty of Law concerning the construction of the legal system of the European Union in the field of gender equality. Croatian universities do not offer courses on EU law and gender equality. Law graduates are weak in the area of EU equality law and applied problem solving. Students of public administration are also not sufficiently trained in EU equality law and the consequence is that those who complete studies and who go on to work in public administration at national and local levels are not equipped to actively participate in gender equality arenas. The module on will be offered in the form of seminars for 2nd year students of the law program and in the form of optional lectures for 1th year students of the master program in public administration. The module will be offered in the form of multidisciplinary live and online seminars and lectures to students, legal professionals, CSOs and media representatives, thus giving greater visibility to this field of study at the national level. The topics of this module will include equal protection standards, feminist legal theory and critical race theory, gender in a global market, access to goods and services, employment, migrations, decision-making and politics, sexual harassment, rape, domestic violence, data and privacy protection and intersections with race and ethnicity. Materials will include cases, commentaries, problems, and media portrayals. The main output of the JM module is to increase awareness and knowledge of gender equality among students and trained professionals who will be able to litigate in cases of gender equality in front of national courts.
