This Action will introduce a Jean Monnet (JM) Module to Maynooth University entitled ‘EU External Relations in a Time of Crisis’. The overall module will be characterized by two complementary components: a new and in-depth postgraduate module on ‘EU external Relations Law and Policy’, and an innovative summer school ‘The EU as a Global Promoter of Human Rights’. The introduction of this new JM Module, in its two components, constitutes an acknowledgment that the international role of the EU has come under intense scrutiny recently, from the challenges of refugee integration and population movements to commercial agreements with other major players on the international scene. The postgraduate module (24 teaching hours) will be open to Maynooth students attending the LL.M. and M.A. in European Studies programmes as well as to Erasmus and international students. It will provide students with a systematic understanding of the role of the EU in multiple global contexts. It will interrogate the relationship between European integration and the development of EU external capacities, and examine specific strands of EU external relations. The Summer School on ‘The EU as a Global Promoter of Human Rights’ (30 teaching hours) will be open to Maynooth postgraduate students attending the LL.M. and M.A. in European Studies programmes and to international students. It will be aim to encourage scholarly and practical engagement with the role of human rights in the EU external relations context. Overall, this JM Module will equip students with knowledge of the full spectrum of EU external relations law and policy activity. The interdisciplinary approach employed as well as the use of dedicated teaching methods will enhance students’ transversal skills. Hence, the JM Module will substantially contribute to upskilling Irish graduates and to prepare them for careers in public administration, national politics and the institutions of the EU.
