The accession of the Central East European (CEE) countries was an historic decision to unify the continent. The next step, fulfilling the overall “project of unifying the continent”, remains the Enlargement of the European Union towards the remaining South East European Countries .The countries of Western Balkans (except Croatia) regardless of their status as potential member-state, are facing uncertainty about when they will join the Union. Many concerns and doubts have been raised about the Europeanization capacity of the Western Balkan countries. Furthermore, EU enlargement and its “transformative power” has have limited impact in the Balkans. The study of EU enlargement and EU enlargement-led Europeanization has extensively focused on the countries from Central Eastern Europe. It has been only recently enriched with studies dealing with specific issues and/or countries of the Western Balkans. Studying and researching the Politics of EU enlargement and its impact in the Western Balkans provides additional empirical setting to the theoretical insights. Secondly, there are contextual reasons to engage on the current process and transformations the Western Balkan countries are going through as a consequence of the EU enlargement process. Thus, the project aims to enhance teaching and research as well as to foster and promote a fruitful debate among academics, practitioners, policy makers and civil society experts on issues related to European integration of the Western Balkans. The overall aim of the WBINTEG project is to re-vitalize the academic and professional debate on the new EU enlargement policy towards the remaining countries of the Western Balkans through a multidisciplinary approach and the involvement of different actors. Thus, WBINTEG analyses the political, legal and economic aspects and reaches different layers of the society, the academia, policy-makers and civil society.
