Our project "Peer learning: job shadowing and implementation of innovating teaching methods at school” aimed at job shadowing and application of innovative teaching procedures in collaboration with our partner school in Central Portugal. The four participating teachers worked on several teaching subjects and collaborated so as to acquire new competences and teaching approaches (e.g. ICT based learning, teaching through the Art, teamwork, differentiated instruction, project based learning). We mainly aimed at motivating learners and reducing school failure.
Pre-visiting: the participants – teachers and administration staff – planned the preparatory activities through the eTwinning platform. They worked on the objectives and decided on the specific materials, tools and procedures to use and the work program to be followed.
While-visiting: the participants implemented what they had agreed to do, they observed and kept records of the ideas and reflections. They observed teachers teaching, they kept a reflective diary and they delivered small schedule teaching (job shadowing, interviews and meetings with teachers, and teaching assignment).
Post-visiting: the participants assessed the activities and composed a brief handbook of all the ideas, tasks and good practices they had implemented. The handbook but mainly the experience acquired has formed the material of in-school training addressing both the school unit staff as well as the neighboring schools.
The project covered teaching and methodology needs of our school concerning innovative approaches to teaching. What is more, longer term cooperation with other European schools along with a structured in-service training for our staff is also expected to be realised. The impact of that specific collaboration is regarded of paramount importance as it has boosted the European direction of our school unit and led to further collaborations with regard to student mobility.
