PROJECT
FINISHED
The aim of this project is to strengthen the feeling of belonging to the European Union based on an understanding and appreciation of our past (projects 1 and 2) and to make young people aware that they are the European entrepreneurs of tomorrow (projects 3 and 4).
This project concerns 5 establishments situated in Italy, in Croatia, in Finland, in Spain and in France. It will involve more than 200 pupils in our schools and will include vocational as well as academic establishments, all of whom are very enthusiastic about working together on a European project. This mix of academic and vocational pupils will enable us to build on their specific and complementary skills, helping to draw together youngsters with very different abilities.
The pupils in our schools tend to be relatively passive during their lessons and we have sometimes observed an overall lack of motivation. Through our proposed project we want to exploit a transverse approach to teaching and thereby make the information more relevant to our young people. In this way, we will be helping the pupils to become much more pro-active in their learning through their efforts together on this joint project.
We envisage four projects based on virtual and physical mobility. For a period extending over two academic years these four projects will include working together at a distance both before and after an actual exchange with the school of the pupils’ choice. This will guarantee that each youngster has the experience of working within a multicultural context.
Project 1: Understanding the past in order to build the future.
The pupils will make documentaries concerning the period of totalitarianism experienced in each of the five member countries. The aim of this is to make them aware of the diversity of national memories and to achieve this they need to open-minded, tolerant and without pre-judgment in order to understand how such authoritarian regimes can be established. It is in this way that we can learn the lessons of the past and take full advantage of the European Union and its guarantee of peace, democracy and the rights of citizens, and mankind in general.
Project 2: Building the future on the foundations of the past - our industrial heritage.
In order to preserve our collective memory it is essential to include the surviving traces from our past and incorporate this into everything we build today and in the future. The goal here is to make the pupils aware of the possibility of conserving their industrial architectural inheritance, and of the importance of their local history in developing innovation. In this way they will be encouraged to develop ideas for the rehabilitation of industrial neighborhoods, in their respective cities, that have fallen into disrepair.
Project 3: Creating the European company of tomorrow
Exchanges concerning the creation of new businesses will open pupils’ eyes to the role of cultural diversity as regards how organizations function. Equally, this project will highlight the importance of languages in creating companies and the value of using NTIC.
Project 4: Developing a digital European citizenship
Finally, we would like to encourage exchanges amongst European youngsters by organizing on-line debates. In this way, we hope to nurture a critical approach encouraging them to develop a European vision that they will adopt in their role as active European citizens, implicating them in a responsible approach to public life, at school and in their lives afterwards. The objective is to engage them in exchanging and challenging each other’s ideas and opinions and to develop a critical approach to news, information from their colleagues, the media and from internet. It is important to help them realize their future role as citizens of a democratic Europe.
This partnership will help our pupils to acquire many of the basic practical skills necessary for their personal development, for their entry into the workplace and their position as active citizens. We hope to stimulate their entrepreneurial spirit, develop cultural and social open-mindedness, and encourage an understanding of European history together with improving their languages skills and computing skills.
The teachers involved in this project are keen to discover different education and social systems and to use this experience in their subsequent teaching whilst, at the same time, developing a real sense of European identity.
