Enhancing employability and skills through mobilities
Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

The ‘Enhancing employability and skills through mobilities’ programme aims to develop learners employability and vocational skills and support their future career development and sustainable participation in the labour market. The programme further aims to support the personal development of learners and provide them with an awareness of other cultures and countries in Europe and broaden opportunities for their future working and social lives. The programmes objectives are to:• Provide students with high quality, relevant work and training placements across Europe.• Support achievement of learning outcomes in a mobilities context.• Provide students and apprentices with access to and participation in the European labour market.• To increase cultural awareness and understanding amongst participant groups.• To facilitate personal and career development and add value to the students learning and work experience, providing a competitive advantage in the labour market. The programme will add significant value to the programme of study that students and apprentices are undertaking within West College Scotland. The mobility will provide the opportunity for students and apprentices to apply prior learning and skills in a different context. The programme responds to significant needs in high levels of youth unemployment across the West of Scotland, and in particular amongst young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. A high proportion of students enrolled at West College Scotland come from disadvantaged backgrounds. 49% of students reside in the 20% post deprived postcodes in the whole of Scotland. Further , 14% of students have a declared disability. The ‘enhancing employability and skills through mobilities’ programme is thus targeted at a student population that faces particular disadvantage in the labour market and less opportunities to develop added value skills and experiences due to the background of income and employment deprivation that many students face. The mobility programme will support 26 students across a range of curricular areas, including apprentices and those studying national and higher national qualifications. WCS have developed a programme collaboratively with partner institutions in Finland and Denmark, focused on providing high value placement activities that both align with and add value to the SQA vocational qualifications that participants are pursuing, and offer the opportunity to develop core employability skills. Partner organisations have developed placement opportunities that WCS students will be invited to apply for. Students will be selected for the programme and the placement opportunities refined and tailored to their particular learning needs. Participants will be supported throughout the placement period through a supervisor from the host organisation.Planned results and impact for the project include achievement of ECVET credits for activity undertaken, Europass Mobility for each participant. Further each participant will develop and enhance their employability skills, developing a wider awareness of opportunities within the wider labour market. At a regional level the project aims to contribute towards increasing skills levels and reductions in youth unemployment.
