ECSWA seeks to enhance the attractiveness of small waterways for freight transport by developing a push barge concept for transnational services. This will make it possible to make full use of the existing waterway capacity for transport without large infrastructure investments. Achievements: From the market potential analysis it became clear that the market potential of the push barge concept is extensive. the total, yearly market potential identified in flanders and the southern Netherlands is approximately 2500000 tonnes dry bulk, 2500000 cube meters sand and 14000 TEUS. This means a shift of about 185000 truck trips per year to inland waterways. The results of the test runs provide an understanding of the advantages of the concept and indicate infrastructural, coneptual and technical possibilities for improvement. consequently it provides a basis that can be used to start up and optimise a commercial exploitation of the concept.
