En Vogue - a tailor-made educational programme to provide an attractive stage for young female learners

Although female representation in IT and economy courses has generally increased, it is still a common European challenge that socially disadvantaged, low-level educated women show low participation and retention rates for these subjects (EUROSTAT 2008). This leads to barriers: Reduced participation in a wider society, reduced access to information, reduced chances on an increasingly demanding labour market. In order to improve this situation, it is important and necessary for adult education to employ practicable strategies of how to attract motivation and increase participation of female learners in these subjects.Results of a survey on the interests of female learners aged 18 to 25, carried out by the consortium (180 questionnaires), prove that the majority (82%) show fascination with the world of fashion and related subjects (design, modes and styles, techniques, professions and actors in this field). Most of them would appreciate these contents appear in their training. Appropriate course design respecting interests of young female learners and teachers/trainers employing practicable tools will lead to female learners' increased motivation, participation and success in IT and economy courses. It will also stimulate their creativity, innovativeness and ownership of educational paths. "EnVogue" is targeted at education providers dealing with disadvantaged, low-level educated young female learners and will equip them with innovative methods and tools for providing IT and economy contents embedded in the thematic world of fashion: "EnVogue Handbook and Toolbox- how to support and motivate young female learners". Teachers and trainers will introduce this learning concept into their educational and counselling activities to make learners benefit. The long-term impact envisaged is increased participation in LLL of groups otherwise excluded from educational measures, as well as the improvement of their employability.
