Training course “Empowering European Youth Workers: Portraying Migration through Cartoon Drawings” organized by Mostar Friedensprojekt e.V. will take place in Potsdam (Germany), from 5th until 14th of December 2014. 36 participants from 15 countries will take part in this training course.
The main topic of the training course is the phenomenon of migration, its significance and meaning for our European society throughout history. Participants will discuss and analyze the migration process, which is comprised of any kind of movement of individuals or group of people (with particular focus on refugees, displaced persons, uprooted people and economic migrants). They will get to know the situations in other European countries as well as about the main actual issues in the whole Europe. The purpose of this training course to analyze and discuss such issues as lack of personal or community support mechanisms for migrants, which can be exposed to racism, xenophobia and discrimination.
Together with two experienced trainers participants will learn to use cartoon drawing technique as a tool to speak about migration phenomenon with youngsters in entertaining and motivating way. The cartoon genres as a method are easily applicable in youth work independent of the age of participants. This medium enjoys high popularity not only among youngsters. It gives quick and remarkable results when learning the basic drawing techniques. It is easily applicable with groups of different individual, cultural, religious or socio-economic backgrounds. In order to find inspiration for cartoon imagery and content of the cartoons, we will analyze and discuss works of artists from different epochs that dealt with the phenomenon of migration (from 1913 until nowadays). Together with trainers participants will investigate their cultural and historical backgrounds. Participants will also have a look at exhibitions in Berlin as well as discover „another“ side of Berlin visiting multinational hot spots of the city, where we will find inspiration for our individual work. Drawing techniques will not only will be showed by trainers and applied by participants, but also the methods to use this medium as means of intercultural, non-verbal communication in youth work will be introduced. Participants will import own experiences with migration in their countries into the creation of a joint storyboard. Purpose is to create a cartoon that will reflect the issue of migration and interdependence on a European level. With this training course Mostar Friedensprojekt e. V. aims to improve the quality of youth work by using creative methods such as drawing, to educate about their practical use with the long term results and outcomes in building of common European society, to deepen the knowledge about the migration phenomenon, to inform about Erasmus + and its opportunities and to encourage participants to reflect on and develop common intercultural projects under the Erasmus + program by putting the newly acquired knowledge, skills and attitudes into practice. It is also important for the organization to open new horizons of understanding and involvement considering the migration processes.
