Care of the newborn in Egypt has improved greatly over the last decade. There is a reduction in neonatal mortality and an increase in the number of survivors of low-birth-weight babies. However, the quality of survival of those babies does not attract as much attention as their number. The primary cause of death of a baby is not identified in the patient record. Furthermore, there is an increased interest among health care providers to focus on neonatal care as it is the area that represents the highest mortality rate in children aged less than five years and high morbidity among survivors. To improve the quality of care, the medical community needs to know how to perform patient-oriented research in neonates. Five collaborating neonatal intensive care units from different Egyptian Universities (Mansoura, AlAzhar, Ain Shams, Tanta, Assuit, and Alexandria) will join the ENN project. All of them admit sick newborns and they will share the predefined set of patient database using the internet as the tool of communication. Each Unit has a good reputation in its region. This will encourage other Units from nearby Hospitals (governmental, NGO, etc) to join. The EU partners (Spain, Germany and UK) are members of Euroneonet, a structure we need to imitate and join later. They will share in advice, training and quality control.The main objective is to establish a national network of trained Egyptian Pediatricians capable to use electronic health records and conduct leading multi-disciplinary, collaborative research dedicated to the improvement of neonatal health and health care to international standards. This will be done through setup a neonatal database, participating in the development of academic staff and their clinical colleagues working outside universities regarding education and innovative research capabilities that can result in improved health and the quality of health care and provide basis for health policy planing and quality improvement and join other international networks. This is will be achieved over a period two years by doing a series of activities in network design and research awarness, training of staff and researchers from universities and outside the academic institutions and communication with health care leaders and similar international networks . The sustainability and dissemination of The ENNTP has been favored by the logic of mutual interest for all the partners (Egyptian Universities and EU partners). who are able to conduct leading multi-disciplinary, collaborative research dedicated to the improvement of neonatal health and health care to international standards. Data entry will be done using the ENN website. At the national level: Every University in the project will be committed to recruit around 6 centers from nearby hospitals to join ENN. The representatives of Egyptian Universities are well known names in the country and can influence others and conduct the training workshops in their region. To encourage active participation of the members of participating centers all over Egypt, regular 4-monthly and annual reports will be sent to them. They will be invited to the annual meeting. The most committed ones will be rewarded by giving them the chance to present their Unit data and achievement in the meeting or in the newsletter. Contact stakeholders: We plan to obtain a real support by active involvement of the top managers in the project’s design and life via interviews, conferences etc. Contacts will be established, early in the project, with the Ministry of Health and two big NGOs (Egyptian Association of Neonatology and Egyptian society of premature and neonatal care) which recognized the importance of the project in Egypt and will allow many presentations about ENN in their national conferences. The National Partners are active board members in both societies. ENN used ICD10 designed by World Health Organization to define diagnoses in its database.
