Demotivated students are one of the main issues our vocational and technical school is facing. Unfortunately, for many of our pupils this demotivation results into:
1. Them leaving secundary school without a proper qualification or a degree;
2. Them studying below their level of qualification and interest (the so-called waterfall effect);
3. Them not pursuing a college education or dropping out from a college education prematurely;
4. Them having behavioural problems or being expelled.
These problems are characteristic for many technical and vocational secundary schools in Flanders. The solutions that we, as a school, have identified are found in proper guidance and counselling. This implies attention towards both their academic results as their socio-emotional wellbeing.
We even want to go one step further. We want to put the focus on them learning instead of on us teaching.
Examining students, providing knowledge and guiding pupils in their assignments are important academic tasks of a teacher. However, most of the time homework and assignments are stressed with little or no attention towards what the pupils have actually learned. The fact that many pupils are pushed towards an education below their level of qualification is a good example.
Research has shown that Finland strives for another pedagogical approach. They do focus entirely on the pupils. PISA results show that their approach implies better results. We strongly believe that it is important for teachers to fundamentally change their mindset. The emphasis needs to be put on the pupils learning in order to increase their motivation.
This project plays an essential part in the change our school needs to go through. In specific, being part of an exchange program for teachers aid us in pushing through this change of mindset. International teachers bring new expertise in the relevant departments and help in exchanging new ideas about education.
Our school wants to be on the forefront of this new vision. We want to be an example for the rest of the school community in order to move this vision along.
