Educating Active Citizenship through Simulation Games

Simulation activities and role games are strong tools for educating active citizenship among youth. These tools are built on the experiential learning, learning by doing approaches that help participants to live through the game and get real experience. The method can be used for different educational aims. Through this method the youth acquire may new skills and competences.
The participants of the TC will learn about the method of the role-playing simulation games: ways of using the method, adptation of different simulation games and role-playing games to certain leaning purposes, and development of simulation activities based on the local realities. The project will address the following issues: lack of new methods which will be more interesting for young people to participate in, especially when it comes to youth from deprived urban area; low level of active participantion of youth from deprived urban areas in local communities.
Aims and objectives of the training: to provide youth workers and youth leaders with the tools of involving youth to active participation in the local communities; to foster the potential of youth in active participation in the local level and influence the local youth policy; to introduce and practice the role-playing and simulation games method (structure, specifications, usage, adaptation for the certain needs, creation of the games); to teach participants how to use this method for teaching young people to be active citizens on the local level; to create new role-playing games and simulation activities based on the participants’ realities, which will be used in the future for teaching young people to be active citizens and to influence the decision-making processes on the local level.
The participants of the trainig course will be youth workers and youth leaders who work with youth from deprived urban areas. Amount of participants: 25. Countries involved into the project France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Spain, Turkey.
The methodology of the training course will be built on non-formal educaiton methods, intercultural learning, experiencial and participatory approaches. The participants will work together for elaborating individual and common ideas of applying received knowledge and skills in their practices and setting cooperation for future. The event will consider the experience of all participants of the training. The event will use methods of non-formal learning and participant orientated approaches. The programme will be conducted using interactive and participative methods (working groups, interactive lectures, simulation games, etc.). The team of experienced trainers will design and lead the programme. Both learning from each other and learning by doing will be crucial. Active participation, group-work and teamwork, as well as theoretical inputs will characterise the programme of the course.
The project short-term and long-term results: 25 youth workers and youth leaders get knowledge and skills and developing and conduciting simulation and role playing games; new simulation and roleplaying games are developed for using in work with youth from deprived urban areas; the participants and their organizations receive new tools for work with youth from deprived urban areas; about 60 local youth from Zamosc take part in the activities organized by the training participants; about 8 follow up activities are organized by the training participants after the training; the cooperation between partnering organizations is set and new idea for cooperation are developed.
