My research project falls within the field of the sociology and social sciences of sport. It is based on the assumption that the study of modern sport provides insight into the social dynamics and transformations in european societies. From this perspective, sport is thus considered as both a laboratory and a social microcosm. It was created in Europe and is one of the most Europeanised spheres of social life. Sport is also an instrument for building European citizenship. Does sport really make a person more European? Although mentioned in literature, the Europeanisation of sport has never been the focus of a thorough sociological study. For sports as well as other domains, this process refers to the elaboration, diffusion and institutionalisation of formal and informal rules, defined first at the European Union level and then incorporated into practices, political speeches and structures and sport organisations at the national level. My project does not take an institutional approach to Europe but is instead based on a sociological analysis of the actors who are today constructing ‘the social Europe of sport’.With formal and informal teachning, workshops with european sport actors and young researchers, my research project aims to go beyond the traditional institutional approach of Europe, carrying out a sociological analysis of the various actors that constitute what can be called “the Europe of Sport”.
