In the course of the project “DIVERSITY AND SCHOOLS – Estonia and Middle East” a Palestinian volunteer is invited to Estonia for 10 months. The volunteer works at Luunja School and NGO Ethical Links. In Luunja School, the main tasks are to help with daycare (pikapäevarühm) and IT class, helps to prepare free-time activities and also speak abut Palestine/Middle East at different lessons (e.g. English, Geography etc). Work at Ethical Links is multifaceted: the volunteer makes visits to other Estonian schools to present his/her culture and country, participates in organizing thematic events on Middle East, helps to map Arab-speaking media, is involved in informal Arabic classes in Tartu, and also participates in the work with refugees in Estonia etc. The aim of the project is by mediating the direct contacts to decrease xenophoba in Estonia, that is spreading mainly via copy-paste articles from European mainstream media, where of the Muslims and people from Middle East are targeted. The project helps to nuance the region, it´s challenges and needs, and to diversify the picture of Middle East and Muslims. In addition, the project also helps to increase the competence for promoting intercultural dialogue for all partners involved: NAFS Empowerment, Ethical Links and Luunja School from Estonia.
