This EVS project "Discovering the world of disABILITIES at Lyhty" will bring two young volunteers to Finland for 12 months period. The volunteers are from Austria and Germany. The volunteers are aged between 18 and 19 and don't have any previous long-term international experience. The host organisation offers work and housing services and culture actvities for people with special needs. The volunteers will participate in the daily activities of the disabled people and will support them in their work activities, as well as organising free-time acitvities. The volunteers will work in a host organisation Lyhty in two different workshops: the German volunteer will work at the Outdoor Workshop Lato and the Austrian volunteer will work in the A.B.C Housing Services of Lyhty.
The activities are situated in the capital city of Helsinki and the volunteers are accommodated in the local host families.
The main objective of this EVS project is to provide the young EVS volunteers unique opportunities for non-formal, intercultural learning experience. The volunteers will be encouraged to find their abilities in cooperation with the people of the host organisations. The volunteers will learn about the realities of people with special needs in the Finnish society and will hopefully get motivated to work on the inclusion of disabled people and their human rights in their home countries. We implement this project hoping that the EVS period in Finland will be an empowering experience for the young volunteers and will improve their competences in the future job market. Through this project the people with special needs will also gain intercultural learning experiences, which can be very meaningful for them and encourage them to take more active role in the society.
