This EVS project "disABILITIES! EVS in City and Countryside Communities" gave opportunity for four EVS volunteers to come to Finland for 12 months period. The volunteers came from from Macedonia, Armenia, Spain and Turkey. The volunteers didn't have any previous long-term international experience and three of them had fewer opportunities. The volunteers worked in two different host organisations in different settings: Camphill Community Myllylähde in peaceful countryside village of Hämeenkoski and NGO called Lyhty in the capital city of Helsinki. Both of these host organisations provide work and housing services for people with special needs, mostly with developmental challenges. The volunteers participated in the daily activities of the disabled people and supported them in their work and also free-time activities. The different work activities included for example gardening, biodynamic agriculture and handicrafts activities, as well as doing household duties together. The main objective of this EVS project was to provide the young EVS volunteers unique opportunities for non-formal, intercultural learning experience. The volunteers were encouraged to reflect themselves and find their abilities in cooperation with the people of the host organisations. The volunteers learnt a lot about the realities of people with special needs in the Finnish society and hopefully got some motivation to work on the inclusion of disabled people and their human rights in their home countries. We implemented this project hoping that the EVS period in Finland will be an empowering experience for the young volunteers and also for the people with special needs.
