(DIS)ability: inclusive volunteering

“I´m really inspired from this training course. Long time I wanted to write a project and I think I maybe will be happen soon.” “I know that disability is not a weakness but only unfair opportunities” The idea of this training-seminar was born during the training for trainers “Plus up your project!”on social inclusion (Projectnr. 14-K16-004) organized by Grenzenlos last October. Participants of the training discussed about the lack of practical preparation for organizations working with volunteers with different (dis)abilities in EVS projects and workcamps and about the absence of passing-on the regarding experience from ex- to future volunteers. Voluntary work including people with diverse (dis)abilities often needs differently adapted methodologies and tools. Within this training we aimed to explore different approaches which can be adapted due to the needs of the different working environments of each organization. The principal idea of the training concept was to gather project coordinators and (ex-)volunteers who have experience in projects concerning people with different (dis)abilities and to create a set of tools and practical guidelines that can be used by organizations working with volunteers in order to create a better preparation for the volunteers and through this a more inclusive working environment. In order to reach the main aim of the project we had following objectives: 1. To reflect on the concept of (dis)abilities and the concerning laws in different countries. That`s why we took “DIS” in brackets because in different countries (dis)ability is treated by different ways. During the training activities we wanted to discover different concepts and attitudes towards this through sharing life realities of the participants. . 2. To share experience and best practices on working with (dis)abled people. 3. To compile a set of practical tools and guidelines for future voluntary work including people with (dis)abilities and volunteering within diverse groups. 4. To create new projects aimed to improve the quality of voluntary work including (dis)abled people. The training-seminar gathered in Russia within the period 21-27 of July 23 youth workers from 8 countries who are motivated to develop their skills in social inclusion field. During the training participants discussed the following topics: - concepts of ability/disability in different socio-cultural contexts, - the results of the United Nations work on (dis)ability and human rights, - the reality of (dis)abled people in different countries, - the best practices and tools within different organizations dealing with (dis)ability, - principals and priorities in inclusive voluntary work. The training course was offered for participants with and without disabilities. The main visible result of the training is the leaflet containing some practical tips for social inclusion work that can be used by the organizations from all over the world working with (dis)abled people as well as blog that we are developing after the training.
