This project organized by the coordinatorship of Rize Hasan Kemal Yardımcı Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in cooperation with: Mersin Chamber of Maritime Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School ;Çeşme Ulusoy Maritime Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School; Didim Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School l Maritime Depatment; Ardeşen Işıklı Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School; N.Serap Ulusoy Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School;Istanbul Piri Reis Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, Surmene Turk Telekom Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School and Şehit İdari Ateşe Çağlar Yucel Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School. The project's participant capacity was 45 people, a specific part of which belongs to all 9 domestic partners. One group of participants received a training on “Safety at Sea” wheras the other group of participants visited for a special training on “Occupational Health and Safety in Shipyards”. Enhancing the quality of education in the schools constituted one of the primary objectives of the project. In this respect, the educators, who was originally specialized in different area but then assigned to field of maritime, learnt the European standarts applied in maritime educations and professional practices and thus they can now compensate their occupational shortages. The second target of this project was to reduce the growing number of workers death in our country through getting familiar with the precautions and measures that are taken in European countries related to occupational health and safety. Another point that is equally important was reaching such eligibility and competency in maritime education that enable all of 9 domestic partners develop a national strategy in maritime education cooperatively.
27 participants took part in the project to receive training on “Safety at Sea” the other 18 participants specialized on 'Occupational Health and Safety”. All of our project participants were teachers and administrators found in maritime vocational high school Education. The group of participants who attended training on Safety at Sea included the tutorials specialized in the field of maritime department of Anatolian Vocational High-Schools wheras the other group participants who received training on Occupational Health and Safety in Shipyards are the instructors in the departments of shipbuilding and machienery of vocational high schools.
The main activities within the project include training of our staff during the flows. The first flow held between 05.04.2015 - 18.04.2015 in Spain. In this flow, the professional education was on the subject of “Safety at Sea”. In this context, the trainees received 2 weeks education regarding to efficiency of using life-saving tools; the techniques of life-saving; personal safety and social reposibility; first aid; fire protection and fire fighting.
The second flow held for 2 weeks between the dates of 24.05.2015 – 06.06.2015 in Latvia. During this flow, 18 participants from Rize Hasan Kemal Deputy Maritime and Anatolian Vocational High School and other partner schools attended training on Occupational Health and Safety in Shipyards. In this respect, the main areas of the training was: Occupational safety and labourer safety; Risk assessment; Scaffolding systems; accident investigation and root cause analysis; emergency planning; analysis of causes and results of work related accidents; occupational diseases and ways to protect from them; accidents in welding operations and preventive measures; blasting; accidents and poisoning in painting activities and preventive measures.
In order to make the project fully successful, the knowledges and experiences, that obtained from training period peculiar to the participants, should not remain special to participants but should be shared through the activities of dissemmination with relevant instutions and organizations in the regional and national plane. With the implementation of the project, all participants increased their competence in the field of maritime and thus the quality of education in the department of maritime is automatically increased. In addition, training on occupational health and safety established an understanding and an approach regarding to measures that can prevent accidents and deaths may occur in the future. The rate of accidents and deaths took place in shipyards are expected to decrease in the case of outputs of the project is shared by the participants schools with the maritime bussinesses in the regions.
Long-term impact of the project is expected to be the emergence of a common national strategy on maritime education. In addition, the schools will increase their instutional capacity in terms of eligibility and competency of pursuing such projects and thus they will further lean on these kind of projects that requires international cooperation.
