Den tolvte norske nasjonalsesjonen i Europeisk Ungdomsparliament
Start date: Sep 16, 2014, End date: Dec 15, 2014 PROJECT  FINISHED

European Youth Parliament (EYP) is a political and religiously independant educational program for High School students, which, amongst other things, includes International Sessions for European youth three times a year in various european cities. Each year, the EYP of Norway organizes a National Session in addition to three Regional Sessions. Last year’s National Session was held in Lillehammer, where 104 students and 25 teachers from all across the country, as well as a German school with 8 students and one teacher participated. Including 33 youth leaders and other guests the session hosted about 170 persons. An EYP-session is based on the model used by the European Parliament. The delegates are divided into eight committees that are given different euro-political themes of today. Together they must analyse the theme thoroughly, identify the challenges and attempt to meet these with solutions and actions to be carried out by European political institutions. This way they are challenged to reflect on relevant values, political questions and they increase their knowledge about European political structure. To participate at an EYP-session is an encouragement to active European citizenship: it visualizes the challenges of today’s and future’s Europe, it contributes to understanding of democratic methods, it is a meeting-place for youth that are interested in developing an active European citizenship and it emphasises the highly important role youth hold in today’s society though meetings between delegates and politicians. The resolutions are presented, debated, criticised and eventually voted over in a General Assembly where all the committees are gathered the last day of the session. Here, the participants get to try formal debate techniques, rhetoric and public speaking. The aim is for as many as possible to be heard and taken seriously; to experience that their knowledge, ideas and opinions are as important as any other’s! EYP-sessions contribute to bringing questions about politics, Europe’s future, democracy, tolerance and understanding of other cultures closer to the youth. These words do not remain mere words as the sessions’ themes and debates give them meaning. In so doing, the EYP contributes to a stronger, more integrated Europe and to laying the foundations for a better, inter-active democracy in future Europe.
