Bildungshaus Schloss Retzhof, an adult education centre of the Styrian Government, is presently the only full accessible adult education centre in Austria. Very important for us is the opportunity of participation in activities and offers of our institution to at best all people. Therefore our efforts aim to establish a barrier-free and inclusive thinking institution. We are surely a best-practice example for Austria in this area. However: We know referring to this, there is still a lot to do. Since the beginning people enjoy to choose Retzhof frequently as a place to meet, because of good international networks and cross-border cooperation. Even in the time of the "iron curtain" Retzhof surprised the public with meetings of people from east and west. Under better conditions nowadays we pursued this tradition. We are in constant cooperation with organisations of more than twelve European countries. For a short time we are the first official associated Styrian member of the European Association for the Education of Adults (EAEA), which is located in Brussels and Helsinki. In our educational work we aim the thoughts of a humanistic idea of man and its development in an emancipatory, inclusive, integrative and international way. Political independence as well as the thought of acceptance is essential and directive for us. In our understanding education should have a clarifying character. That could contribute to emancipation of people, who are dependent. To expand all these aims and intentions, it is important to educate ourselves currently and not to stop. To achieve that on international level has an especial benefit. Through the project “Learning and living democracy” the participants experienced innovation and improvements and implemented that in the improvement of education. Some key results of the project are: - Learning from Best Practice examples - knowledge and know-how on the subjects as inclusion, participation, Community Education / Development, intercultural groups, etc. - reinforcement of the European Network - ideas for the development of the Institute for the inclusion and accessibility in adult education for the State of Styria - activities and projects in surrounding communities - concepts, ideas and motivation for further development
