Democracy school
Start date: Feb 1, 2016, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

This youth exchange will take place in Podskalie, Slovakia from 23 to 30 April and will involve 30 young people aged 13-15 from Slovakia and Czech Republic. The young people are all representatives of student councils from primary schools and town student parlaments. The project is an initiative of the young representatives and will be organized by the youth coordinator of the town of Trencin. The aims of the project is raise awareness about the democratic system and how it reflects on the activities of student parlaments, and consequently increase active youth participation in the lives of their communities. Participants will share their experiences and ideas with other young people from our neighbour country where so many things are so similar but in this area the reality is so different. During the project, the young people will learn more about student councils and will also develop some of their soft skills useful for their work in the councils. The concrete objectives are for students to learn more about promotion methods for their activities and also experiencing hands-on how to deal with conflicts, manage groups, give tasks, motivate others, prepare and take part in a discussion with town representatives, prepare a presentation, etc. Each day of the 7-day youth exchange will be devoted to a specific area. In general, the morning sessions will be more theoretical, in form of interactive workshops and presentations, when participants will receive input and food for thought on their work in student councils. The afternoon will be dedicated to practical activities when they will try and experiment with what they learned. At the end of each day they will be guided to reflect on their experiences and to evaluate their participation in the project. One day will be devoted to activities out in the city, when participants will meet members of the city of Trencin's commission for youth and sport as well as to visit a school. We believe this youth exchange will help participants see student councils as a "democracy school" - an opportunity to learn about citizenship and participation in practice. They will be able to use the gained knowledge and experience in their works at councils immediatly after returning home, so the impact will be seen in a very short time. Everyone involved will be better informed and more active citizens, and will gain the tools to bring change and take active roles in the life of their community. This impact will be seen in various levels, from school to town to region and finally, to an European level.
