Democracy and you(th)
Start date: May 4, 2015, End date: Dec 3, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project originated during and after a network seminar in Narbonne (France) in November 2014. Some of the partners (now part of an informal network) agreed to focus on democracy and youth participation, considering such a theme extremely considerable for young people, in a general context of mistrust toward democratic processes and institutions. This project aims to make youngsters reflect and work, towards non-formal learing methodologies, on the meaning of democracy and the basic principles at its basis, on the extent and importance of the work done by democratic institutions at local, regional/national and European level. Youths will face with the need to discuss and share different opinions and ideas and find common solutions on concrete topics, understanding mutual respect, cohoperation, tolerance toward intercultural differences and diverging opinions. Lastly they will be urged to reflect on their own local context, the role they can have as active citizens and to concretely act and put the new skills and awareness gained during the exchange in everyday life. The exchange will take place in Avigliana, near Torino, from 31st August to 7th September 2015, consisting of 6 activity days and it will involve 7 leaders and 42 youngsters aged 17 to 21 from Italy, Latvia, Croatia, Malta, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. Participants share mostly the same local background, are involved in their organizations activities and project and are chosen according to the motivation and availability to expose themselves. Activities include visits to Piedmont Regional Council and Avigliana City Council, meeting local administration and sharing with them views on the topic; non-formal educational activities of wide range (inguistic games, creative activities, workshops, brainstorming, focus groups, role games) to fully involve youths at any level and to demand them to use skills and competences or develop new ones. Youngsters will be also active players during follow-up and results dissemination. Exchange materials (notably Final Memorandum on democracy and participation and videospots on democracy) will be spread through Internet, social media (YouTube and Facebook), local newspapers, TVs, and sent to local and regional institutions. Public exhibitions will be organized thanks to the partner administrations (Avigliana and Nole municipalities) and each group will be involved in widespreading the results in public meetings with schools, citizens, organizations and local authorities. New partnerships may be activated (e.g. with InformaGiovani Torino on active citizenship), and the results of this project could be a starting point for a following exchange more focused on citizenship to take place in 2016 in one of the partner Countries.
