Dementia - Accepting the callenge. Learning to care and cope.
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The demographic development shows the continuing rise in numbers of elderly people. As the proportion of elderly people in the society grows, the need for care targeted on their specific needs is growing too. This is the reason why our project "Dementia - Accepting the challenge. Learning to care and cope." was aiming to show the importance of multidisciplinary cooperation and teamwork in the care of senior citizens with dementia. The main objective of the project was to increase the level of expertise and knowledge of students who are preparing for their future careers by internship. The sub-project goals were to increase students’ language skills, increase competence and multicultural tolerance, to teach students critical thinking, enhance their personal development and strengthen their opportunities in the labour market. The project was aimed at students from clinical and lyceum branches of our nursing school. 24 students over 18 years from clinical branches Nursing assistent and Diploma adult nurse and from lyceum branche took part in the internship. Students adopted the bio-psycho-social model of perceiving geriatric issues and geriatric patient. Students completed internship at selected senior care centres in the UK. After the initial training, they worked in a team led by an experienced mentor and learnt new techniques, technologies and cultivated their behaviour, language and cultural tolerance. During the internship, the students created a portfolio which critically described the functioning of different healthcare systems. The outcome was a personal development of students, increase in professional knowledge, advance in language and cultural competences and in this way they improved their vocational training and bettered their chances on the labour market in the Czech Republic and abroad. The internship was aimed at nursing care issues and the importance of supporting the elderly with dementia, ensuring their quality of life and self-sufficiency, which should reflect on their future profession and lead to improvement in the care provided to seniors.
