DELOS: Development of an e-learning platform for the operation and management of biogas production units
The EU countries, and specifically the Mediterranean countries that participate in this consortium (Cyprus, Greece, Spain) consider Biogas production units operation and management a very important aspect of their environmental policies, but they have neither specific curricula and practical oriented materials in their education systems regarding this field nor a specific map of competencies. This project promoted the process of anaerobic digestion of regional agro-wastes (i.e. olive mill wastewaters, cheese whey, cow/ pig manure) as a promising treatment process of high organic content agro-wastes. Anaerobic digestion may comprise substantial solutions to waste treatment both in energy production and also environmental safe byproduct recovery (compost, irrigation water). Despite the fact that anaerobic digestion being state-of-the-art in sewage sludge and anaerobic industrial wastewater treatment few applications of anaerobic digestion of agro-wastes are found. The purpose of the project is to develop awareness of the environmental problem of agro-waste disposal and knowledge of the anaerobic digestion process of agro-wastes as potential treatment solution both to the general public (i.e. engineers, environmentalists, scientists in general) and to other stakeholders that could usefully benefit from the project's knowledge. The potential implementation, in collaboration with potential investors, of the innovative methodology analyzed in the project is also foreseen. The target audience will be the general public, local stakeholders, local policy makers, potential investors. Educational actions are addressed to target groups in an attempt to educate them in a comprehensible way regarding environmental problem of agro-waste disposal from agricultural activities (i.e. olive oil production, cattle-breeding, dairy production) and promote the proposed technology of anaerobic co-digestion.Overall the project contributed to the improvement of education and training in the aforementioned field by offering complete and high-quality educational contents and a digital tool that will facilitate the accreditation of competencies.
