Dealing with the Past and remembering/ Vergangenheitsarbeit und Erinnerung in Oswiecim/Auschwitz
Start date: Jul 1, 2016, End date: Nov 30, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project "Dealing with the Past and Memory" is a part of educational work of Krakowska Fundacja Centrum Dialogu i Modlitwy w Oświęcimiu (CDiM ). The project is aimed at young people from Germany, Poland and the other European countries. CDiM is located near the former Concentration Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. The aim of CDiM is to create a place where people of various denominations and faith can come together for meetings, conversation, learning, reflections and prayer. CDiM helps to commemorate the victims and to build a world of mutual respect, reconciliation and peace. The Education Department of CDiM carries out this kind of work in which the volunteers are involved. The volunteers help with watching over the study groups visiting CDiM for 3-6 days. They arrange group programmes together with the other workers of the Education Department and with the group leaders. They also participate in fulfilling those programmes. During the meetings organised in schools of Oświęcim the volunteers build bridges between the Polish pupils and the international youth who come to CDiM. Furthermore the volunteers assist in the library, gathering archives, publishing and making exhibitions and lectures. One of the most important tasks is the guided tour through the city of Oświęcim given by the volunteer. The project "Peace Service" wants to establish mutual understanding through overcoming of stereotypes. Moreover, the volunteers have the opportunities for personal as well as professional development and will acquire new skills. Thanks to an extensive and qualified accompaniment the volunteer will be actively integrated in the social life of a living polish city. The volunteer will get the opportunity to learn Polish through one or two languages courses offered during the year.
