Pollution is a problem that ignores national borders - all countries worldwide are concerned, but different nations have different problems, they perform differently in handling the consequences and offer different solutions and alternatives. During our two-part exchange programme, a binational group of young people (18-27) from Belarus and Germany will pay attention to pollution resulting from energy economy and agriculture. We will inspect specific problems of Belarus and Germany, see how they are treated by the nations and what people from there suggest as alternatives to the problem-causing circumstances. The comparison of these two countries which apparently do not have much in common has the potential to open new insights and stimulate unusual ideas. To give the participants the necessary amount of input, we have developed a varied programme for each part of the exchange: In spring 2015 during 8 days in Belarus we will have a workshop on nuclear security, visit the ground of the nuclear power plant in Ostrovets and the Centre for rural enterprise in Komarovo, we will learn about permaculture, the ecosystem of the National Park Golubyje Osöra and get in contact with local or national associations such as eco-clubs and the bike movement. In Germany, we plan to carry out a critical city tour through Berlin on consumption and globalisation, to go on a study trip to the area of open-cast mining of brown coal in Lausitz and to an enterprise for regenerative energies in the Uckermark, we will learn how work goes on at a farm that is based on community supported agriculture, take part in a workshop of urban gardening and hopefully arrange a meeting with a representative of the German Bundestag. The group of 30 participants will dive deep into various facets of the theory and practice of this currently relevant topic. But besides this learning process of interactive investigation, presentations, group coordinative elements, direct experience and independent work out the most important part of the information processing will be the daily discussions that shall help the members to organize given facts, to develop a consistent opinion and to inspire themselves to new forms of participation in politics and social life. We expect that the exchange will lead to, or at least encourage the creation of new activities and initiatives and to strengthen alternative ideas in Belarus and Germany and that participants will multiply the positive experiences they made and the knowledge they gained. We hope to support the idea of a common Europe by giving young people the chance to act in a multinational context - as citizens of one world.
