Deaf People in Europe Acquiring Languages through E-Learning - Transfer of Innovation
The Deal TOI project was created aiming at two main goals: 1) moving the successful DEAL Project model (www.deal-leonardo.eu) to United Kingdom, starting a written English course for business communication and using English Sign Language within educational interactions; 2) deeply experimenting DEAL classes in a network including three Italian regions, making them steadily enter the horizon of educational systems addressing deaf learners in the partner Countries. The educational systems of the involved regions and, in perspective, of all Italy and partner Countries, will be thus allowed to efficiently answer the deaf learners' need of linguistic education, especially in the perspective of vocational training. The DEAL project research activities have in fact confirmed that this problem is rather far from the solution: today, deaf learners do not still have tools, approaches, material for linguistic training specifically built in relation to their educational needs and cognitive styles. The DEAL project (winner of 2008 European Label) has begun answering this need, creating an educational model and suitable tools to act on the deaf people’s unimpaired channel, sight, and use national sign languages as pin of educational communication. It appears therefore urgent to give a full application to the prepared tools, creating the conditions for their stable use on the part of educational institutions, in agreement with deaf people’s trade Associations and Public Administrations. The DEAL TOI partnership is built bearing this guideline in mind: in fact, it includes, among others, the Institute for Deaf People’s Specialized Instruction “Magarotto”, with its seats in Padua, Rome and Turin, E.N.S. (Italian acronym for Ente Nazionale Sordi, i.e. Deaf People’s National Association). In agreement with the needs recorded at the Training Institutions and trade Associations, it has been decided to propose to move to English as a necessary element, and, at present, critical point in the professional qualification of young deaf people who study as professional commercial secretaries all over Europe. At the end of the project the main expected results therefore coincide with the full operability of linguistic training tools in deaf learners' e-learning, with the experimented functionality of Italian, English and Spanish classes for deaf learners, with the presence in the partner countries of well-prepared trainers, with the stabilization of DEAL tools in the target group's professionalizing training and their aware introduction in the action sphere of trade Associations as well as public administrations. The expected impact is, therefore, the adjustment of DEAL tools and classes inside the training systems of partner countries, with a particular attention to the leader, too, as relevant contribution to the strategic diffusion of e-learning in the horizon of deaf students' linguistic training.
