Creative Communities

Thorpid "The Village“ is a pilot-project in East Iceland focused on vocational training of craftsmen, product design and innovation based on local skills and resources in wood and textiles. This project will bring together designers, producers and craftsmen both self-taught and school educated. The project originated from a general lack of quality products in the area, a lack of vocational training opportunities for craftsmen and the need for a more focused cooperation between stakeholders who are designers, craftsmen and companies. In East-Iceland there is a strong tradition of hand-craft. The aim of the project „Creative communities“ is to strengthen vocational training, the infrastructure, the economy and innovate the culture concerning small industry, art, design and production in the participants regions and/or countries . This will be done by importing the best practice of the most expert partners in the chosen sectors. The project consortium is made up of a strong network of agencies that are devoted to helping society and its individuals to grow to their best potential. Icelandic partners are the Development Centre of East Iceland, the East-Icelandic Knowledge Network and the East Iceland Cultural Board. These organizations have years of experience in the transfer of knowledge and support to innovation and process development on both national and European level. Outcomes in three of the work packages are expected to include a curriculum so the transfer of knowledge will live on in the forthcoming years and benefit the community and participants in the future. The curriculum is expected to be taught in the East-Iceland Knowledge Network and Nässjö Learning Centre. Other results include quality products that can represent the area of East-Iceland and/or Nässjö. The area of East-Iceland has lacked locally produced products. These products are expected to be sold in a newly developed sales centre for tourists, that has been developed along with "The Village". The main areas of knowledge that are expected to be used are products of design, using wool, reindeer leather and wood, different uses of wood and textile, design with wool and/or reindeer leather, and different methods used in marketing and process development for handcrafted products. The aim is that designers and craftsmen in the partner countries/regions, along with the manufacturers involved, learn new ways of working with their material and that the new knowledge and knowhow will benefit the areas in years to come. The project also seeks to define the creative community through CRT contribution to the project, this includes definition of creative communities in Bornholm, Nässjö and East-Iceland, their elements and growth opportunities for the future.
