Creating Cultures
Start date: Mar 1, 2013,
Creating Cultures aims to encourage the sharing of cultures and the redefining of the individuals culture, through sharing experiences in the community through performance. The volunteers will be from Portugal and Brazil and will be volunteering with A Mind Apart in Sheffield, in the North East of England. They will be in the UK for six months and will develop and perform a short performance with current A Mind Apart volunteers, aiming to perform in local schools and foster mutual understanding between young people in different countries. Following the Olympics in the UK and leading up to the World Cup 2014 in Brazil, the project aims to create a greater understanding of the cultures between the three countries, promoting tolerance and social cohesion amongst young people. Activities will include English Lessons, teaching other young people portuguese, assisting staff members in A Mind Apart with teaching the young people that have contact with the organisation. They will spend time with other projects that partner/work with A Mind Apart in the local area, to experience a range of different types of organisations. These may include Sheffield City Council. Sheffield FC, St Thomas’ Church Philadelphia Campus and The Burton Street Foundation. Volunteers will experience non formal ways of learning while participating in the community and sharing knowledge and skills. Activities will take place at A Mind Apart offices and across the city and South Yorkshire. The volunteers will also be taken on trips outside of Sheffield, which may include London, arts events and festivals, other cities in England such as Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds. Volunteers will be hosted in a house where they will have a local student or volunteer who will act as their ‘house support’. The ‘house support will make sure they have no problems with their daily living, help them with public transport, and share the social aspects of the UK.
