Course Manuals for Inland Navigation Education and Training
All members of this project are members of EDINNA - Education in Inland Navigation. EDINNA is an assocation of 28 IWT e&t institutes from 15 countries. The EDINNA association recognises that all members use the same European waterway system and have a different background in various educational systems in Europe. It is the aim of EDINNA to come to a harmonized education, training and certification system for inland waterway personnel in order to ensure high quality of trained staff on board the vessels, thus raising the level of safety on all navigable waterways as well as the mobility of staff within the sector in the EU as well as the shift from e.g. the maritime sector to the Inland Waterway sector. This project will anlayse in depth how the maritime sector is realising the implementation of the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) through the concept of so called "Model Courses. It will then review in which form this approach is feasible for the inland navigation sector and set-up a process for establishing benchmarks for "Course Manuals" aiming at the implementation of STCIN. A methodology for the development of "Course Manuals" will be established.A "Course Manual" will be designed to facilitate the delivery of training in the competence standards required to implement the STCIN into practical e&t using the same format and content to guarantee the quality and results of the subject of the course manual. It will also provide a sound basis for the delivery of the mentioned training programmes in the framework of the STCIN. Next to the development of the format, one concrete subject, namely "Navigation", will be elaborated as an example. The other subjects of the STCIN then can be designed later based on the format and example. It should provide useful information to conduct the course subject and approaches in teaching content and techniques. The objectives of the format and example includes the planning and preparation of effective teaching and instruction, the selection of appropriate methods of instruction and teaching materials as well as the evaluation of the teaching and learning process. The membership in EDINNA, the contribution (most of the members of the project team) to Platina, as well as the experience of most of the members in former European projects, provides this project with a solid basis for transnational cooperation.
