At Teuvo Pakkala school we use a lot of functional methods in education, especially in primary education, mathematics and science. We are interested in new teaching methods and new ways of teaching. Our school has invested in IT tools and we have the opportunity to take advantage of them for primary schools. We would like also to see how other countries have solved the integration of students with special education needs. New knowledge and experiences above all is a good thing for our pupils. In Finland the curriculum renewal work has just began and we want to get a new perspective on school-specific section. Our objectives are 1) to gain international experiences and perspectives 2) to explore new methods, tools and ideas for teaching and 3) to expand the linguistic and digital competences of our staff.Context/Background of the projectThe new Finnish Curriculum emphasizes the student as an active learner, working through interaction. Functional education is used at our school particularly within Science and Mathematics. We wish that our Curriculum would continue to develop and extend these approaches. We would like to have the opportunity to gain new perspectives and new dimensions to our teaching , observing and discussing how this is approached in other countries. We want to understand how other Primary Schools take into account and ingrate different types of learners. We are interested in variety of learning solutions, at Teuvo Pakkala we are constantly assessing how we can use our the facilities to promote learning and education .There are plans to decorate our corridors taking into consideration the functionality of the learning environment.Within Oulu there are regional co-operation models, for example, between Preschools and Schools. We are interested in developing these models. One of our goals is International networking. We would like to explore, how other countries approach phenomenon-based learning( holistic, real world situations as a starting point learning) how schools integrate subjects/themes and support children from varying Grade classes together. We would like to implement this kind of project with a partner school or schools. For example, the children could design a Mathematical game and implement it in English. When planning the game, sustainable development and multi literacy should be taken into account . Our school has invested in the purchase of IT equipment. ICT would be used when creating the game and would be in use by the cooperation of the techers in the different countiries.A wide-ranging expansion of knowledge is our goal in this project; thinking and learning to learn, cultural competence and interaction, multi-literacy, ICT participation & skills and influencing and building for a sustainable future.Number and profile of participants :The project involves 10 teachers, our Headmaster, Special Educational Needs teacher, our language teacher, our music teacher, our maths teacher and our class teachers.
