J Summary
The fashion industry comprises a global market and fashion unites people. It is essential for young future designers to understand how fashion trends are predicted. It is also important for young fashion students to compare traditions and culture with countries other than their own.
Four students from S:t Martins gymnasium will work with a project at Uxbridge college, London, for 26 days. The students are doing a three year course within the textile and design programme. They will explore and investigate how fashion trends can be predicted. They will question what factors influence the fashion industry – i.e. political, economic, social and ethnic. Prior to their stay in London they will do research in Sweden to seek knowledge and inspiration from design and culture. The students will study contemporary art and design in London. They will analyse and draw conclusions and they will compare differences and similarities from their research studies with those of their English partners. Together they will try to predict tomorrow’s fashion and create their own collection based on their research, analysis and conclusions.
The students will experience working in a foreign design college, using new methods. They will practice speaking English and using a specific terminology. The project will develop the students’ knowledge and an understanding of how fashion trends are created.
