Rainey Endowed is a rural, grammar school from a peripheral region of the EU, with 700 pupils from both sides of the local community. The ethos of the school aims to develop European citizens of the 21st Century.
In line with the school development plan, it is intended that staff professional development through European training courses will help raise the standard of teaching and learning in the school to outstanding and that the international dimension of this project will broaden cultural awareness of the diversity in education and allow for sharing of ideas and methodologies .
This projects focus, specifically on the idea of an outdoor classroom for teaching environmental issues in Geography has improved the experience and engagement of our learners. A Geography teacher with a desire to develop their ability to inspire environmental awareness amongst students took part in an Outdoor Learning Training Course with Kinda Education Centre, Sweden which aims to give teachers ideas of methods to teach math, science and craft/science interdisciplinary in the ‘out-of-doors’. Knowledge about outdoor education in Europe including the basic theory of Outdoor Environmental Education such as personal and social development, environmental education and outdoor activities and health was outlined by scholars from Linkoping University.
As a result of the training the participant has gained professional development amongst European colleagues to develop their teaching methods and approaches in relation to environmental education in the outdoors. These teaching strategies that connect individual learners to their surrounding environment have been shared with colleagues in the Rainey and disseminated to other local geography departments, marketing the value added by staff development through Erasmus+. Through the project Geography students have a greater knowledge of their local environment and are more empowered to participate actively in society.
As the first application made by Rainey Endowed School for the mobility of school staff, it is intended that this may be rolled out to a great number of staff in the coming years both enhancing the international dimension of professional development and encouraging greater interaction with other institutions throughout Europe.
