Conflict Transformation through Culture: Intercultural Conflict Management in Youth Work

Context of the ProjectSocial conflict is phenomenon which occurs by the restriction of different ideas, feelings, values or motivation among people. It also consist of risks that can cause polarisation and exclusion among people and thus create an unequal situations. This phenomenon occurs among people, but also represents incompatibilities between groups and organizations as well. Conflicts are like icebergs and emphasize the positions of parties first, but the rooted causes of them generally are different interests and values. Moreover, the diversity of youth work can also create a conflict between young people from different social background and experiences, and also between young people and youth workers; but these differences can also be a opportunity to learn working together for mutual benefit (Youth Transforming Conflict, Council of Europe, 2012). The main aim of our training course is to contribute the awareness of using cultural differences as a source in conflict management. Objectives of the ProjectThe training course is specifically designed to provide a learning environment for the participants who are youth workers, youth trainers and project managers in the field of conflict management- To learn about the characteristics knowledge of intercultural conflict management approach and to gain its methodogical skills - To develop new perspectives by experiencing on cultural differences, needs, values and positions- To integrate the intercultural conflict management approach into fields where they work in order to transform conflicts in the youth field- To develop new projects or support current projects by using intercultural conflict management approach- To enable them to empower young people in order to raise awareness of intercultural conflict management and social inclusion- To gain information about YouthPass and Erasmus + and to manage to use these tools in fields they work inDescription of the Activity & Number and Profile of ParticipantsThe activity as a training course with 30 participants from 11 different countries (gender balanced and also including disadvantaged participants) will be held in Istanbul during 8 days between 1-8 August 2016 including arrival and departure days by 3 trainers and 2 technical support personnel. MethodologyThe programme of the training course will be implemented by non-formal methods and to aim to create mutual learning and interaction. The non-formal methods which will be used during the 8 days training course: - Simulation Games- Forum Theatre and Role Plays- Small Group Work- Outdoor Activities- Visual PresentationsA Short Description of the Results and Impact EnvisagedThe participants will gain awareness of intercultural conflict management in youthwork, mediation and intercultural learning through project and transfer it to their behavior and attitudes. Beside that they will also get experiences by implementing new knowledge and skills into their work fields. In addition to those they will develop a project after the training course by using this new knowledge and experiences and also gain skills of using different methods through intercultural conflict management. Moreover, participants will improve the quality of their projects and to able to develop multilingual projects such as Training Courses, European Voluntary Service and Youth Exchange projects by having the chance to understand the Erasmus +. Another important envisaged impact of the project is that the participants will have a sensitivity to intercultural learning and collaboraiton in order to support their projects with the European dimension and interculturality.The Potential Longer Term Benefits- To foster conflict transformation in youthwork by using new methods- To increase intercultural collaboration in youthwork- To empower the European and international dimensions of projects in youth field- To diversify the context of projects in Erasmus +
