PROJECT
FINISHED
'CONNECTED WITH OUR COMMUNITY'
Context: the main objective of our project is to estimulate the involvement and compromise of our students with the needs of our community, Palomares del Río, in which our school is located. Our town has experienced in recent years an urban and population growth without it being accompanied by an equivalent socio-cultural development. To the latter, we must add the socio-economic needs originated by the current economic crisis, which is most suffered by the families with the least educational, socio-cultural and economic resources. It is within this context where the interest of our project lies. In order to put it into action, we have established a seven-phase sequence, which follows:
1) Teacher training in our school with regards to the techniques and methodology required to promote entrepreneurship and social compromise amongst our students. Thus, we are active participants in the KA1 programme for the mobility of learners; 2) Analysis of the results of teacher training and adaptation of its conclusions to the specific needs and characteristics of our school and community; 3) Recruitment and training of students participating in the project, in an attempt to obtain the greatest involvement possible and at all the levels possible; 4) Detection and assessment of the needs of the community by students. For this purpose, contacts with local social agents and entities; 5) Analysis of data collection and ellaboration of suggestions and proposals by the students to raise them to the corresponding proceedings and institutions. Design of specific project which will be able to be carried out in a specific time frame; 6) Putting into effect of projects by students both at school and community levels; 7) Assessment of our experience and statement of new proposals.
Participants: ten teachers are expected to be involved in our project. This group of teachers will become the members of the Board for the assessment and follow-up of the project in collaboration with the school's Management Team and the Department Chair Coordination Team. They would represent a wide range of knowledge areas. Nevertheless, the objectives which we target in our project go beyond any specific curricular area. They would all contribute towards achieving the linguistic competence necessary to receive the information requested.
Activities: concerning the content of the training activities requested, they have been chosen to reach our goals: entrepreneurship, cooperation, outdoor learning, communication skills. There are already specific proposals which may become real project short term: meetings between students and Palomares del Río city government representatives; with residents' associations; with the headmasters of the two Primary schools in the town; with the representatives of non-profit organisations within our town. Development of specific projects: organisation of a swap market; intergenerational conference; publishing and promotion of the school's newsletter including the porposals and the activities derived from the project and its development; organisation of sports and cultural activities.
Methodology: meetings between the project's board and the school's management team, the Department Chair's Coordination Team, the Teaching Staff and the School Council will be established; techniques of group dynamics and cohesion as well as techniques for cooperative learning will be established for the students participating in the project; meetings will be established between the students and the social agents within the community in order to detect the needs and state the proposals and projects. Throughout the process, the students will be offered support from the guidance counselor and will be accompanied by the participating teachers.
Results and impact expected: when social and cultural events have been organised in our community, both the response and the participation obtained have been highly satisfactory. Student involvement in our school which will be carried out in an organised manner, will have a highly significant impact in terms of maturity, initiative and autonomy of students; of enriching the cultural life of Palomares del Río; of enriching leisure activities for the Palomares youth population; of an educational project which will be more closely linked to the real needs and characteristics of the social population it attends to.
Potential long-term benefits: it is very likely that some of the proposals will become engrained in the social and cultural life of the community; the participating students will have acquired social and personal maturity and the ability to assess and intervene in the reality surrounding; a new educational style for our school.
