Component-Based Design meets Model-Driven Engineering methodologies: improving the development of Embedded Systems (COMING)
Start date: May 1, 2010, End date: Apr 30, 2012 PROJECT  FINISHED

Embedded systems are those systems in which the software is embedded into a hardware product, ranging from mobile phones to aircraft navigation controllers. They usually must satisfy timing constraints and resource usage such as CPU, energy, memory, bus bandwidth. Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) and Component-Based Development (CBD) can be seen as two orthogonal approaches to deal with the ever increasing complexity of modern embedded systems development. The former aims at making applications resilient to technology evolutions by abstracting the business logic from platform/hardware details, while the latter promotes the reuse and recombination of already realized and validated software units. Despite the fact that the adoption of MDE mechanisms in CBD could be profitable for reducing complexity and for improving reusability, these are still prevented by the lack of a rigorous formalization of CBD concepts into the MDE field. This project aims at joining complementary expertise gained by the hosting organization in CBD of embedded systems and the state-of-the-art knowledge in MDE techniques carried in by the research fellow. The expected outcomes are manifold, both from the researcher and the hosting organization sides, notably: - advance of the current state-of-the-art methodologies devoted to embedded systems development; - development of new skills for the research fellow; - enrichment of the education and training activities provided by the hosting organization to both students and industrial partners; - integration of researcher's activities into the host environment to build up a career advancement path.
