The actors and target groups of Expedition Metropolis e.V.(ExMe) mainly consist of youngsters, both on local and on international level. Since the foundation of the association the necessity of exchange between youngsters through international learning and experiencing spaces has been growing and become essential. In the frame of the Youth Art Center "Schlesische 27" in the district of Berlin-Kreuzberg our association has already been active as a coordinator of the European volunteer network Creative Cooperations for more than 10 years. Until now about 200 european volunteers participated in this exchange program. ExMe frequently receives volunteers also through the German national volunteer program. Furthermore we had several young people from Turkey, Italy, Sweden etc. in the frame of other international mobility programs. In context of the 'Youth in Action' program we've already organised several bilateral and multilateral youth exchanges and trainings.
All these experiences made us feel the strong desire to provide young individuals with an opportunity to take initiative and to develop within a framework of intercultural collaboration.
Past and current European projects enriched and still enrich our knowledge and our cross-boarder exchange experiences in the socio-cultural level, particularly when bringing in community theatre and intercultural education into a broader context of urban culture and urban development.
At the same time we think that European Voluntary Service can help German and foreign people to take social responsibility and to have a better orientation in Europe.
The selected volunteers are graduates in Art History and Cultural Sociology. Both candidates are well experienced in a variety of professional and voluntary positions addressing the interface of social, cultural and organisational work. Their work with ExMe will be a professional opportunity of exploration and gaining experience that should be enriching for both sides.
Regarding their individual interests and skills the 2 volunteers will be introduced and involved.
Possible fields of activities are:
- theatre and theatre pedagogy. Here volunteers find the opportunity to assist in the field of stage-technique or directing. They could assist in the field of coordination or organisation of theatre projects or they might develop their own projects. Beside that they are invited to participate in the rehearsals and trainings of Expedition Metropolis.
- in the area of media (graphic design, photography, website-management, social media) and public relations (writing texts, translations and articles)
- in the area of organisation of events and workshops. The volunteers will have the possibility to create and coordinate creative and sociocultural workshops (for children, youngsters and intergenerationally). Of course they are always welcome to participate themselves in workshops, to develop their own projects or to assist other workshop leaders
- maintaining and development of the infrastructure: repairing and improvement of premises, working with wood, service of stage- and media-equipment, stage building etc.
- activities in the area of fundraising, project coordination and entrepreneurship.
The main result expected from the project is that the volunteers will gain an improved competence to connect artistical work and organisational methods, and to utilise it as a resource within a context of community based educational work. The community will benefit from the volunteers through gaining an opportunity for intercultural reflection of accustomed cultural modes.
