Into Dance (Community Cohesion through Creativity) was established in November 2009 and was a 2 year project enabling staff, artists and adult learners from a wide range of backgrounds to develop new skills in dance and share good practice through creative participatory projects. A key focus for the project has been around ‘integrating’ a range of disabled and disadvantaged groups from different countries and backgrounds and developing new contemporary dance pieces which have been performed at high profile public platforms and festivals. Participants have been encouraged to take ownership of creating and choregraphing the new work during 3 international mobilities. Participants took part in a series of workshops (normally 3 days of workshops run from 10am to 4pm) working with a lead choregrapher and dance artists. Over 60 adult learners have taken part in the workshops and throughout the project, audiences of over 1,000 have seen the finished work.During the 2 years, each project partner hosted on behalf of the partnership a series of professional visits and meetings with key partners and organisations working within the fields of culture and disability in each location; these included local authority departments, charities, the voluntary sector and HE Institutes. The Into Dance staff had the chance to speak to people working within these organisations and find out about the way that these organisations work in each country and the services that they provide. This side programme was very worth while to the partners and helped foster a deeper understanding of some of the challenges facing disabled and disadvantaged adults and examples of good practice in this field.
