Common problem solving strategies as links between mathematics and science
Start date: Nov 1, 2009,

Throughout Europe there is an alarming decline in young people’s interest in scientific disciplines, and thus our society may in the future be seriously disadvantaged at all levels of the workforce by ill-prepared citizens who do not have a critical understanding of important issues that affect the world in which they live. The project, therefore, has the aim of developing teaching that connects science and mathematics with each other and most crucially with the lives of individual students and their communities. We seek to do this in a way that will foster in young people a desire to learn science throughout their lives by coming to realize that this is essential if they are to be empowered as active citizens with critical scientific inquiry and problem solving skills. This focus will ensure that we will fore-ground the transversal key competences and equity for students across the partnership nations. Central to this will be the development of a programme of support for teaching that takes an interdisciplinary approach and integrates the use of ICT. The project will work with teachers from the outset to develop guidelines and classroom materials through iterative cycles of design followed by trial implementation and evaluation allowing us to ensure a product that whilst having applicability for all will be easily adaptable to local. Outputs will include interdisciplinary learning materials supported by 2 professional development workshops in each nation during the lifetime of the project. These will allow “missionary” staff from schools to work collaboratively to develop their own pedagogies to support the shift in epistemology advocated by the project. All materials will be translated into each partner nation’s language and will be freely available on the web. A variety of methods of valorisation to be adopted, particularly through professional national networks for teachers, will ensure impact and exploitation beyond the scope and scale of the project.
