It aims at improved emergency preparedness for radiation accidents. The project will increase knowledge on the current radiological situation, by studying environmental samples collected from the area. It will also study the long-term effects of radiation to different sources of livelihood on the area, such as reindeer husbandry, natural products and tourism. One of the project´s tasks is also to increase public knowledge on the current radiological situation and on radiation safety. Achievements: The project has published information regarding the occurrence of radioactive material in the Arctic environment and food chain, and studied long-term effects of potential nuclear accidents on the region’s indigenous population, reindeer husbandry, tourism and other industries. It is also important that the established contacts between various institutions, and this has enhanced the development of common strategies for emergency situations and routine monitoring.
