Citywise Education (Skill Net)
Start date: Aug 1, 2012,
Skill Net is a project run by Citywise Education in Dublin, Ireland that gives 3 young people from different backgrounds the opportunity to volunteer for 1 year doing a wide variety of activities with young people in disadvantaged areas. These activities include teaching / team-teaching on a full time education project, taking part in sports as a way of supporting young people and keeping them out of trouble, supporting a drop-in facility for young people who are looking for activities to be part of & facilitating groups of young people in a technology / computer hub with activities such as video editing, music creation, website design and computer programming and robotics.Skill Net will provide some training on arrival for delivery of activities, but hopes to provide a platform for volunteers to showcase talents and skills they already have and teach those to the young people who attend Citywise. As we are hosting 3 volunteers we hope to receive a wide range of skill sets and so each individuals involvement in each program or area of expertise is flexible. Volunteers will even have the opportunities to learn from each other and take part in groups as participants as well as facilitators.Skill Net covers the themes of ‘Media and Communications/Youth information’ & ‘Education through Sport and outdoor activities’. Both themes will involve different activities but the underlying values and motives are the same for both. We at Citywise want to encourage our young people who live in an area of social disadvantage to grow strong in the faith and confidence in themselves as well as their educational abilities. We believe this can be achieved through these two very different themes and will focus on a broad range of young people and not only limit the project to one type of youth.
