CitytoCity Cabaret
Start date: Jun 1, 2010,

CitytoCity Cabaret will promote the changing status of dance in Europe by contextualising the various roles dance plays in European society (educationally, recreationally, as exercise, as a way to socialise and as an art form). It achieves this through a series eight dance cabaret performances and an associated programme of eight internationally commissioned residencies in four cities (Zagreb, Athens, Sofia and London). The performances and residencies provide different meeting points for professional dance artists and the local community and both celebrate the quality and cultural diversity of the European dance community. The project offers the four organisers involved (HIPP, Zagreb, Full House Promotion, Athens, Heteropodi, Sofia and gDA, London) a context in which to explore the cultural meaning of dance for different nations within Europe, providing a snapshot of dance and its social underpinnings during a time of rapid cultural change within the region. The cabarets offer creative and performing opportunities for up to 150 professional artists working within and outside their resident country and 200 local amateur performers. The project also offers opportunities for up to 100 people with and without training to have a high quality creative experience of dance by attending a week's residency with one of the international artists who will be specially commissioned to create a short dance work for them to perform at their local cabaret. It is an artistic and organisational model through which the organisers and the artists they present can develop socially diverse audiences for contemporary dance, exchange skills and share issues of arts, professional and audience development with other artists and professionals in face to face contact and online.
