PROJECT
FINISHED
Our school was founded in 1855 and during its long history it has followed all the pedagogical developments. Within the framework of the new duties and responsibilities emerging from the financial and social crisis in Greece, directors and teachers alike need to update their knowledge and skills on matters related to the management of the new issues that have to be dealt with at school daily. In addition, the increasing competition between students to enter the so-called “good” University faculties intensifies the pressure on teachers to improve their teaching and pedagogical knowledge and skills towards the development of a more effective school. According to the proposed project plan, the Director and two teachers of our school (a Mother Tongue and History teacher and a Mathematician) will travel abroad on job shadowing and the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher will attend a structured seminar. In particular, the Director will visit a group of Portuguese schools under single management where he is expected to familiarize himself with the Portuguese experimental system on the single management of a big multiple school, with the basic school legislation, with more specialized management and leadership skills and techniques, with any innovations of the Portuguese educational model, and finally, with the ISO system used there. Within the framework of upgrading the quality of education provided by our school, we believe that further insight and specialization of Ralleio teachers in the teaching of subjects such as Mother Tongue, History, Mathematics and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) will assist further our students to accomplish both their learning and, later on, professional goals. We expect that this course of action will particularly empower our low performance students against possible early school leaving. Therefore, one of our the Mother Tongue and History teachers will visit on job shadowing an Italian school in Sicily, where the Greek element is obvious, and where she is expected to gain original teaching experience of the Mother Tongue and History and to acquire further insight into the teaching methodology of these subjects. One of our Mathematicians will visit on job shadowing a school in Iceland where she is expected to acquire further insight into the teaching methodology of Mathematics using ICT. Given the European orientation of our school and the use of English as “lingua franca” globally, it is necessary to update and enrich the school’s foreign language teaching standards, especially that of English (EFL) and to further the use of English in the teaching of other subjects (Content Language Integrated Learning, CLIL) .Consequently, our English teacher will travel to Florence, Italy to attend a structured seminar on Teaching through Video Making , so that she can create and adapt visual resources for the teaching purposes of EFL and of CLIL. The three traveling teachers and the school principal have to upload daily reports on the eTwinning platform while job shadowing or attending the structured seminar as evidence of their presence and active participation in the project. We intend to make use of Europass to certify the professional qualifications acquired by the travelling teachers as well as of Mobility Europass to certify the added value of their participation in this project. Benefits are expected to derive from this project for:• The school on the whole as a result of improved management and teaching• The school as a whole in the field of administration and general management of all the relevant issues, of hidden curriculum, of the school’s functionality, of the general school climate, of the school’s relations with the students’ parents and the local community, and finally, in the field of financial management• The participating teachers and Director • Ralleio teachers who will be trained by the traveling teachers upon return • Ralleio students as the final recipients of the improved and enhanced educational-pedagogical services stemming from this project • Ralleio Mother Tongue and History teachers, Mathematicians and EFL teachers• The school’s reputation, on which Ralleio has relied to attract students for 159 years thus ensuring its longevity.Total improvement of the learning process and the offered educational services is also expected, particularly to low performance students, since a core group of dynamic and trained teachers can make a difference raising the standard for the whole school community. Furthermore, the working connection with the visited schools may well become useful for other Greek teachers and directors who would like to take advantage of such projects and partnerships in the future.
